Do you guys use Twitter? I registered and poked around the site awhile back and yesterday logged back in and again tried to get into it. The problem is, I just don’t get it. I don’t really care what people are doing and what’s on their mind 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. I don’t care where a celebrity is eating and what my old friend from high school thinks about Manny Ramirez getting suspended for using PED’s. I also don’t think anybody gives a shit what I’m thinking, where I’m eating and what I’m doing during my days on this Earth.
I guess I just don’t really care all that much. The problem is I’m in the minority here. People love “following” their favorite sports stars, celebrities and friends. I see the benefit in that you get to find out personal information about people you normally wouldn’t know anything about but at the same time I really don’t think half of the stuff they put out there to be 100% true. Maybe where they are and what they’re doing but their “personal” thoughts I’m sure are all PR related and calculated into getting you to support whatever they’re saying. Most of their posts I'm sure are their new business ventures or tweets to promote whatever they're trying to get you to buy. It's a gimmick for advertising.
Some of my friends follow sports casters and other news style “celebrities”. I get that I guess as they’re getting information quicker than those that do not follow that particular person. I guess I don’t mind because I’ll get the information sometime, just not the second the sports/news caster finds out. Whoop-dee-doo, I have to wait a whole 5 minutes longer. Trust me, I can wait, I don’t need to “follow” a hundred different people.
My main beef with this whole social networking tool is that we’re supposed to be teaching our kids and other young adults to be leaders and not “follow” the in crowd. Yet, the basis for Twitter is to “follow” people and live their life. I’m sorry, but I can’t get behind that. I’m all for Facebook’s “what’s on your mind” feature as you don’t have to “follow” them to see it. If you’re a friend with that person and care to hear what’s on their mind, then you can. Maybe they should change the whole “following” tagline. Instead, make it “friends with” or “listening to” or “hanging with”. Whenever I hear a celebrity, important person, company or ad say, “Follow us on Twitter for more information” I cringe. Maybe it’s me but Twitter really is just a big marketing tool designed to get you to “follow” celebrities or companies into their next money grab. Hey kids, don’t follow me, be a leader and guess what if that means I lose you on my Twitter account, so be it!!!
Twitter Sucks and while I’m all for Social Networking, this site just doesn’t make much sense to me. I also wish I had thought of it first as boy are the creators raking in the dough, pretty much every person and company has a Twitter account. I found the strangest people on Twitter that I feel shouldn’t have people “following” them at all. Do we really need to know what’s on Jose Canseco and Andy Dick’s mind?
Maybe it’s me but stop with the “following” of people and live your own damn life!
